agree with what you said here. draft Reddit is losing their minds over one game. He’s at risk of being deported, probably played a factor. He’s new to ball to so he’ll improve his body and hands. I just don’t understand. I saw multiple people saying they’ll take mark williams over him, like he isn’t the better defender, shooter, and has even more size. He can do the basic stuff. That draft sub drives me crazy with some of their takes. He’s a better mover than mark too. What are people seeing that im not? Absurd.
I agree that the commentary on Maluach commentary is overblown after one rough game against a very good rebounding team. We should also keep in mind that this version of Khaman is probably the "worst" that he'll ever be once he starts developing in the NBA.
On the rebounding front, we just gotta look at his numbers as well. Khaman finished his freshman season (per Bart Torvik) with a 16.5 OREB% and 19.2 DREB%.
Some recent bigs who are comparable in terms of role/draft projection imo:
- Alex Sarr: 8.4 OREB%, 18.2 DREB% (last season with Perth in the NBL)
- Dereck Lively: 12.3 OREB%, 17.8 DREB% (only season at Duke)
- Donovan Clingan: 13.8 OREB%, 23.4 DREB% (final season at UConn)
- Kel'el Ware: 8.0 REB%, 26.1 DREB% (season at Indiana)
- Yves Missi: 14.4 OREB%, 16.3 DREB% (only season at Baylor)
- Jalen Duren: 14.0 OREB%, 21.5 DREB%
- Christian Koloko: 12.2 OREB%, 18.0 DREB%
Maluach has the highest OREB% of any big here. He's better on the defensive glass than Sarr, Lively, Missi, and Koloko. Doesn't worry me that much, although I acknowledge that there's room to get better, of course.
